Special performance board for use in damp or humid areas

Cembrit Special Performance (SP) Board, with a density of 1450 kg/m3, is a lining board that has been specially designed for use in potentially damp or humid situations, such as bathrooms, swimming pool areas, restaurant kitchens and leisure centres.

Produced from cement, cellulose and mineral fillers, Special Performance Board combines superior strength and durability, making it long-lasting with minimum maintenance costs. It has passed the American Ceramic Tile Institute Test.

Applications

The main function of constructions in damp and humid areas is to prevent water or moisture penetration into internal walls, floors and ceilings. Damp or humid areas should always be built from material that can withstand moisture and water. Special Performance Board has been developed for demanding applications such as the following:

bathrooms

car washes

cold stores

hospitals

hotels

kitchens

laundries

leisure centres

sports centres

swimming pools

prefabricated units with tiled walls

Special Performance Board is a specially formulated board, sealed both sides with a PVDC sealer that acts as a moisture barrier. Special Performance Board is the result of long product development, and has successfully undergone product testing in the UK, the USA and Scandinavia. Because of the formulation of the product it will not be affected by water, therefore it will not expand, rot or deteriorate.

Fixing and fastenings

The Cembrit 35 x 4.2 mm countersunk cutting head screw is ideal for steel studs, and the 40 x 2.3 mm nail or 35 x 4.2 mm screw for timber studs.

Because of its strength it is easy to attach different hangers to Special Performance Board. Fastenings for heavy attachments should be centered on internal studwork.

The loading strengths of different fastenings are shown in the table below. The values given are averages, and apply only to boards without tiles. The security coefficient is 2.

Installation

Cembrit Special Performance Board requires careful installation to ensure that its full potential is realised. In areas where tiling is required, it is essential to comply with the relevant codes of practice on board dryness and the secure and rigid bracing of the boards for tiling.

Fixing procedure

  1. Special Performance Board should be fixed to either timber or steel studs at 406 mm maximum centres. All framing must be straight, plumb and true, and must provide firm support for the boards.
  2. Cut the boards 5 mm shorter than the floor-to-ceiling height, and butt them firmly against the ceiling.
  3. Fix screws or nails, commencing at the centre of the board and working towards the edges.
  4. Fix further boards, allowing a 3 mm gap between boards. Joints on both sides of the partition should be on the same stud to facilitate sealing.
  5. Seal joints with a silicone sealer.
  6. Cembrit recommend the drilling of 2 mm pilot holes.

Decoration

Tiling

Cembrit Special Performance Board is the perfect substrate for tiling and has successfully undergone testing in the UK, the USA and Scandinavia. The tile adhesive should be used according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and applied in vertical bands. The tiles should be bedded in, allowing normal spacing for grouting. The tiles should be grouted as normal when the bedding adhesive is dry. A rubber gasket strip should be fitted at ceiling, corner and floor junctions.

Wallpapering

Special Performance Board requires no special treatment before wallpapering. Apply wallpaper using any proprietary adhesive suitable for the wallpaper, and following the manufacturer’s recommendations. Care should be taken to ensure that joints in the wallpaper do not occur at corners. All joints and screw/nail holes should be filled prior to wallpapering.

Painting

Special Performance Board can be painted without any special priming, using an alkali-resistant paint. Joints, nail and screw heads should be filled and all dust removed from the surface. Two coats of paint usually give a satisfactory finish.
